Materials Science and Technology

We provide multi-disciplinary materials science and engineering expertise enabling our clients to research, design, manufacture and manage capability through the product lifecycle.

Our team of materials scientists and engineers has widespread, specialist knowledge of materials and manufacturing techniques across a range of sectors, and appropriate characterisation and test methods to ensure conformity to accredited standards.

Our team is well-equipped to offer support in materials and manufacturing selection for your application, as well as support with ageing, life extension and repair where required.

As part of Science Group's science and technology innovation companies, we can draw on the experience and knowledge from our cross-sector sister company Sagentia innovation which ensures the best thought leadership and technical expertise is deployed to introduce innovative and cutting-edge solutions for the benefit of our clients.

Services

Materials selection for design, manufacture and repair
  • Materials understanding: understanding of material properties and performance through the product lifecycle including design options, costs and alternatives.
  • Environmental considerations: Understanding of material behaviour across a range of environments. This covers everything from the benign breathable atmosphere of a submarine or the hostile environments that military vehicles can encounter.

Product design for manufacture, assembly and disassembly
  • Product design for full lifecycle: The design of products with the entire CADMID lifecycle in consideration, for optimisation of resource allocation and promotion of circular economy. This can be applied from mass, to batch, to bespoke production of components and assemblies. When it comes to disassembly, it is ensured that the materials are handled appropriately for disposal.
Advanced manufacturing technologies
  • Exploiting additive manufacture: the design and fabrication of components by additive manufacturing including microstructural and defect characterisation, process parameter optimisation, and the development of novel methods to improve the quality of additively manufactured components.
  • Utilising Laser process design: the design of laser processes and the understanding of laser-material interactions in laser processes such as cutting, drilling and selective laser melting.

Materials testing and characterisation
  • Test design and plans: The production of test plans and specimens for materials characterisation, including chemical, physical, thermal and mechanical testing, using appropriate materials analysis methods and appropriate standards such as ISO, ASTM and DEF-STAN.
  • Data analysis: Data analysis for a wide range of characterisation methods to inform future testing and modifications required.
Materials management and assurance
  • Regulatory compliance: understanding of legislative and regulatory requirements in the context of safety, environment and sustainability with the production of management plans, local business process, assessments (including non-compliance), auditing and risk mitigation.
  • Digital tools: Support in the development and application of digital tools to carry out tailored surveys, database design, risk visualisation and horizon scanning.
