SSNR Requirements
Background & requirement
SSNR is a multi-decade programme, with significant interdependencies to other programmes which have their own requirements and dependencies, some of which were not going to be mature for some years. A ‘middle-out’ approach to requirements engineering was proposed by the MOD and the requirements management was outsourced to BAE. TP Group were brought in to support BAE and to ensure the MOD’s interests were maintained.
Approach
The TP Group team had to balance an approach defined by the MOD to run requirements and design activities concurrently with delivering a coherent and complete set of requirements meeting the user need but being driven by design. TP Group worked collaboratively with the MOD and the BAE teams comprising BAE, Atkins and independent contractors based around the country. The team brought in better working practices, configuration control and restructured the requirements database. The team promoted the use of Model based System Engineering and drove the need for the architecture and requirements to be much more closely aligned.
Outcome
The requirements are now a coherent set and align with the architecture. The scope of the requirements is understood, and gaps are easily identified. A large team is able to work on the requirements concurrently due to better working practices. Linkages to higher level user and capability definition is now in place. The route to acceptance is better defined.
